Gear Whores In Turkish Photography Forums

A photographer I’m following on youtube once said that there are gear whores out there who can’t show a single work they done but they keep talking about how good their expensive gear is.

This is exactly what’s happening in Turkish photography forums. There are two of them dedicated to the two big and well known brand. I joined those to get some information about the good equipment dealers for the future reference in case of buying new lenses or a new camera body. While this information is limited - forums filled with fan boys and gear whores that only able to talk about how better the F/1.4 than F/1.8 is and how awesome x brand’s 85mm is etc. Meanwhile they don’t have a single good work to show on their portfolio. They all purchased the most expensive stuff like morons and their photography looks the same with average cell phone shots.

I always avoided Turkish forums since 2004. Either on 3D and digital art. Now I’ll do the same for photography. Bunch of wise ass who talks like they are art professors & master photographers and everything they say should be taken like a law without discussion.

I wonder if these morons aware that there are photographers like Don McCullin and Jay Maisel out there who are down to earth and modest but doing such a groundbreaking work. And late masters like Ansel Adams and Ernst Haas who changed the world with their photography and their philosophy on the art of photography. I don’t think they aware…

I think ignorance is the only curse in this world.

Apparition

A ghostly female figure standing on the pier watching the sunset. Long exposure photography taken with my humble Nikon D90 and 18-55 lens with a tripod of course. It was a pretty amazing evening for the usual summer with clean sky. There were some majestic clouds and it was pleasure to shoot. I hope you enjoy & thanks for looking - please have a visit to my profile to see the rest of my work.

Nikon 70-300 f/4.5 VR Or Sigma 70-200 f/2.8

Master photographer Jay Maisel was using that Nikon 70-300VR, now he is using underestimated and overlooked Nikon 28-300VR - look for what FroKnowsPhoto says about that lens meanwhile Maisel shooting stunning work with it.

I was using Nikon 55-300VR for sports and broke it, now using Nikon 55-200VR. Not thinking to go for a 2.8 lens. I don’t believe 2.8 is magical and make me a better photographer. Plus I have a tendency to do more with lesser tools - they are actually helping me to stand out from the crowd. Every sports photographer out there using similar / same equipment and you can not see any difference between the shots of different photographers. All of them look like they fabricated in the same facility.

I’d go for Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR perhaps - I had very bad experience with a SIGMA 70-300 (non VR) APO DG lens so I have trust issues even with their expensive sutff - perhaps mine was a bad copy but I prefer to stick with the brand lenses. I’d prefer Nikon’s 70-200 f/4 VR instead of Sigma’s 70-200 f/2.8.

Also I always approach in doubt to the people who promote expensive equipment and claim that its the only way to make good images. Because its not. I’m shooting my cat portraits in the street with a $100 lens.

I humbly recommend everyone to stop listening today’s internet-famous-pop-photographers instead start looking the advices of the old masters like Ansel Adams, Ernst Haas… I’ve read a lot from them about photography equipment and they always stated that it is you and not the equipment. A decent lens manufactured with today’s technology like 70-300VR can render wonderful images if you know what you are doing.

That’s my 2 cents…

Evenings

For some reason which I’m not sure - I like evenings much better than any other hour of a day. I don’t know if its because of my childhood since I was leaving elementary school at the evening hours or because of my office works in the past.

The boring and dull light after the sunrise is annoying to me. Makes everything look flat and ordinary. But there is something magical with the evenings - before the sunset, during sunset and the 45-50 minute of phase after the sunset especially when there is afterglow. It even feels different when you listen to the songs like Come Undone (Duran Duran) and Hunting High & Low (A-ha) on the evenings and during the sunset.

That’s probably the reason that I love taking photographs on the evening hours and during the sunset. Everything looks magical and much more beautiful than any other hour in the day.
